Our jewellery studio is located in Oakura- a beautiful small town in Taranaki. Many people seem surprised when they visit our studio for the first time, asking us why we are not operating from New Plymouth or another larger New Zealand city. We have thought about a relocation because of all the foot traffic that we must be missing out on. Many of our clients are from Auckland and Wellington, so the quiet green space that surrounds us and allows us to be creative far outweighs any advantages of being in town. Our studio is located a relaxing 12 min drive from New Plymouth. For us far enough away from all the shopping rush and parking chaos of a city. In our shop our customers can take their time to browse through our 100smq studio and can also get a glimpse behind our workbench.
Our favourite must sees and dos in Taranaki:
During the Summertime Oakura is a great spot to take the kids to the beach and enjoy the local walks. The beach is also patrolled during the busy season.
Surfing! Oakura has fantastic waves all year around. Our beach is situated inside a natural bend, if you are a beginner you will enjoy the white water and gentle waves right in front of the surf club. Advanced surfers can have their pick from different breaks along Oakura beach or can go for a walk down south to check out Ahu-Ahu road. For a great surf-forecast check out this page.
If you need some gear: a surf shop is located on Tasman parade, just opposite the surf lifesaving club. Rent a long board or sign up for some paddle board lessons or check out their website.
Great Ice-cream: A Movenpick ice-cream cart is parked on nice days next to the beach car-park. Coconut-chocolate, vegan and other great ice-creams are available from Kin&Co on South Road, next to the BP station.
Coffee: Get your coffee fix from Francois at Café High Tide between the Hairdressers and Beauty studio on the main road.
Chips & Dips to take for your long day at the beach- call into the 4square on the corner of South Road and Butlers Lane.
Get out and about! Further up Surrey Hill Road you will find one of New Zealand’s oldest Pa sites- Koru Pa. There is parking available at the end of the road and the walk through 2 gates and a cow paddock is sign posted by doc. Don’t be afraid, the cows in New Zealand are generally friendly and respectful of humans. The entrance of the Pa site will welcome you to a short bush walk. Enjoy stunning views on top of the Pa and explore the tracks that will lead you to our local river.
For more great walking tracks like the Davies track or Sefton track please visit Docs website, they also have updates on weather alerts.
Lonely planet has awarded us with the honour of one of the world’s best regions- the second best actually. The Pouakai crossing track has been mentioned as a must do and great alternative to the Tongariro crossing. An amazing experience with its changing landscape, you can enjoy dense bush and views towards Mt Taranaki. Rob Needs (pioneer of this great track) from Taranaki Top Guides has a drop off and pick up service available and also offers great guided tours up Mt Taranaki.
Enjoy your stay!
